Americans were the first to understand that high-quality advertising is worth investments. In 1917 the Lee Company used a baseball star Ruth for their first advertising campaign - he wore their custom jeans everywhere and received good profits for it. But that was just the beginning of the jeans advertising history. After the World War II the largest American jeans producing companies which were of course Levi's, Lee and Wrangler invested enormous amounts of money in advertising. The result was the rapid growth of the product popularity.
The next jeans advertising shake-up took place in the late 1970s as customized designer jeans were launched out. That was when the famous provocative Calvin Klein jeans promo appeared. In this promo 15 year-old Brooke Shields said: "You wanna know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing!" The great scandal which burst out after the promo had appeared increased the profits and the popularity of the CK Company to a great extent. But the best jeans advertising is considered to be the one called "The Laundrette". This promo was created for Levi's by the BBH Company (the UK) in 1986. Nick Cayman who was Madonna's boyfriend of that time starred in that promo.
Many custom jeans producing companies have tried to achieve Levi's advertising success, but the only one that ever managed to come close to Levi's level and even overcome it was Diesel.
And several facts:
The biggest truly customized jeans in the world were made in Peru in 2008. Their length is 43 meters and the weight is 7,5 tons. The gigantic jeans have pockets, buttons and even a belt the length of which is about 30 meters. These jeans entered the Guinness Record Book as the largest jeans in the world.
The largest custom jeans were made by the Blue Bell Co in 1946. They were meant for Robert Earl Hughes who was 20 years old and weighed about 700 pounds (300 kg).
The smallest jeans were made for the famous doll couple - Barbie and Ken. This doll family has several models made for them by famous world designers. The oldest and at the same time the most expensive jeans in the world are the Levi's custom jeans produced in 1879. They are kept in a special Levi's Co Archives safe and are priced at $125000. In 1879 their price was about $10.
The most expensive regular jeans were made by the Levi's Co too. The price of these jeans is $85000. They were decorated by gold, diamonds and rubies and were launched in 2003.
